Andrew Gomez Meyer, affectionately known to friends and family as “Andy,” “Drew,” or “Drew Dog,” passed away peacefully in Chicago, Illinois, on September 18, 2026, at the age of 65, after a fierce battle with cancer. Through it all, he always had a smile and the determination to manage it his way right until the very end.
Andrew was born in San Antonio, Texas, on June 22, 1961. He was a deeply loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, nephew, uncle, and friend known for his generous heart, warm personality, and infectious laughter.
Andrew grew up in Chicago, graduating from Bowen High School before earning his Bachelor’s Degree from Chicago State University. Over his life, Andrew explored many career opportunities but found his true calling serving others through the State of Illinois Department of Human Services. He dedicated many years to his community, first as a caseworker for DCFS and later working with The Illinois Department of Public Aid.
Outside of work, sports and community youth programs were a massive part of Andrew’s life. He loved participating in, watching, and coaching various sporting events. He spent countless hours coaching basketball, baseball, and soccer, and proudly served as the Regional Commissioner for the AYSO program at Mann Park in Hegewisch.
Because his roots were split between Texas and Illinois, his sports allegiances were famously divided. He loved both the Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears, rooted for the San Antonio Spurs while holding a fierce allegiance to the Chicago Bulls, and when it came to baseball, he happily cheered on both the White Sox and the Cubs. Beyond sports, music of all genres took center stage in his life; he loved listening to it and was known by many as an excellent dancer. Andrew was a friend to all and brought immense joy to everyone around him.
Andrew is survived by his beloved wife, Dawn; his children, Andrew (JoJo), Justine (TJ), Troy (Gena), Bertha, Renata (Parker), Sebastian, and Tybolt; and his cherished grandchildren, Eliot, Troy, Hazel, Annabel, Savannah, Athena, Malia, and Zephyr.
He is also survived by his siblings, Frank Yepes, Debra Saucedo, Guadalupe Meyer, Augustine Meyer Jr., Adolph Meyer, Dominique Meyer, and Penelope Meyer, as well as a vast circle of friends who became family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Saucedo; his father, Augustine Meyer Sr.; his stepfathers, David Reyna and Manuel Saucedo; and his sister, Yvonne Meyer.
