Barbara L. Hoyer (nee Niper)

Passed away on April 26, 2026

Barbara Hoyer (nee Niper), 86 of St. John, IN,  a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and pioneering nurse, passed away leaving behind a legacy of compassion, service, and unwavering dedication to others.

Barbara shared 65 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Ray Hoyer. Together, they built a life centered on family, love, and enduring partnership.

She was a proud and loving mother to Marla (Mark) Lareau, and a cherished grandmother to Marisa (Kyle) Uzubell and Morgan Lareau. Her greatest joy extended to the next generation as a great-grandmother to Rory Uzubell. Barbara also held a special place in her heart for her treasured Wheaton Terrier, Winnie, who brought her constant companionship and comfort. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents Francis and Irene Niper, brother Ron Niper and sister Louann Michalcak.

Barbara’s life’s work was defined by her deep commitment to nursing and caring for others. She graduated from nursing school at Thornton Community College in 1971 and later earned her Bachelor’s degree in Health Arts from the College of St. Francis. She began her remarkable 55-year nursing career working in the nursery, where her compassion for the most vulnerable first took root. Over the years, Barbara held numerous leadership roles across acute care, home health, and hospice services. Most prominently, she was founding executive of what was then known as Hospice of Northwest Indiana (1981). At a time when hospice care received no Medicare, Medicaid, or insurance reimbursement, Barbara worked tirelessly to build the program through the generosity of the community, ensuring that compassionate end-of-life care was available to those in need. Her vision and determination helped shape hospice care in the region and touched countless lives.

Later in her career, Barbara continued her impact in healthcare as a surveyor for the Indiana State Board of Health. She concluded her professional journey, owning a consultant business to where she provided services to long-term care facilities, where she remained a trusted mentor and advocate for quality patient care.

Outside of her professional life, Barbara found joy in the simple and beautiful moments of home. She loved gardening—especially tending to her roses—and took great pride in her flowers. Her favorite time of year was the Christmas season, when her home would glow with warmth and tradition, complete with four beautifully decorated trees.

Barbara will be remembered for her strength, kindness, and lifelong dedication to helping others. Her legacy lives on through the family she loved so deeply and the countless patients and colleagues whose lives she touched.

Donations can be made in Barbara’s name to the charity or organization of your choosing.
