John J. Merkle, "Jim"

Passed away on April 8, 2026

John J. Merkle “Jim”, age 77, late of St. John, IN, formerly of Danville, IL, passed away peacefully after a short, courageous battle with cancer on April 8, 2026. Beloved husband of Marian (nee Hallahan) for 51 years, the love of his life. Loving father of Wesley (Katherine) Merkle and Carlie (Sean Forester) Merkle. Devoted Papa of Michaela, Jonathan, Oliver, and Finn. Special Grandpa to Olivia, Amelia, and Alex Kuncis. Dearest brother of Jerry (Krystina) Merkle, Mary (Bob) Hogueisson, late Michael (Mary Ellen) Merkle, late Patricia (Kevin) Raymond, and late Dennis Merkle. Beloved brother-in-law of Marian’s 7 siblings. Dedicated Uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Jim retired from Alstom Power in 2007, allowing him and Marian to enjoy a long retirement filled with travel and many adventures. Their most special destination every year was Door County, WI, where they made memories with their family and best friends, and it will forever remain a sacred place in the hearts of their loved ones.

Jim was an avid reader his entire life, which made him wise and a good advisor to anyone who came to him for guidance. He always knew just what to say, and you always felt better for getting Jim’s advice.

He enjoyed time on the golf course with his buddies, gardening, as evidenced by his phenomenal backyard and hand-built waterfall, model railroading, conservation, hiking, and boating. His favorite time was spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Everyone who met Jim became his friend due to his kind, caring, and gentle spirit, feeling better for having known him. He always had a positive impact and left everyone and every place he went to better than how he found it.

Because Jim loved hiking, gardening, and caring for the Earth, a memorial donation can be made in Jim’s name to The Nature Conservancy. Or, simply, plant something beautiful in honor of him.

Condolences
"I will never forget my first Thanksgiving without my Dad, it was our favorite holiday together Sean and Carlie so graciously hosted that first one with Marian and Jim at there house. My Dad always prayed over our meal, and I was dreading not hearing my Dad pray. But sweet loving Jim stood up and led us in prayer. My heart was full, it filled a void for me and my family. Thank you Marian for sharing your sweet husband, Wes and Carlie for sharing your sweet Dad .with all of us. It was stated that he left an impression on everyone he met, it’s so very true. Love to you all. And I sure hope Jim is filling Bong in on all the Ollie and Finn stories ☺️"

"Dear Family, I can't tell you how much I loved working with Jim. Great Guy, always seemed to be happy and on top the "game". When those of us that worked with him heard we'd lost him, it was a really sad thing. Dear Marian I will be asking GOD to BLESS and COMFORT you and all the family and Friends. Love Bruce"

"We were so sad to hear of Jim's passing. We met him briefly, with Marian and Carlie when they visited the UK, in 2011. He was a kind and caring man and we enjoyed being in his company. It was obvious that he was devoted to his family. Thinking of you all and sending love and condolences at this sad time. From all the extended family here xx"
