Celebrating the Life of Kristin Schmal

With heavy hearts, we invite you to join us in celebrating the life of Kristin Schmal — a loving wife, devoted mother, cherished teacher, and an incredible friend to so many.

Kristin passed away on March 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.

She was a passionate music teacher in Chicago Heights School District 170, where she inspired her students every day. Outside the classroom, Kristin gave so much of herself to youth hockey — supporting her boys and countless other kids along the way. She served as a board member for Midwest Youth Blackbirds Hockey, Lake Central Hockey, and the Illiana Hockey League, always working to build something meaningful for others.

More than anything, Kristin was the heart of our family — a loving and devoted wife to Jeff and an incredible mom to Jason, Kaleb, and Kaiden. She was also the devoted daughter of the late Lennart and Ruth Johnson. She was involved in everything her boys did, always cheering them on, always showing up, always giving her whole heart.

Please join us as we come together to share stories, laughter, and memories, and to celebrate the life of someone who gave so much to all of us. Memorial Visitation will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. until the time of “Celebration of Life Service” at 4:00 p.m.  at the Elmwood Funeral Chapel 11300 W. 97th Ln. St. John, IN. 46373
