Denise Cruz (née Vargas), aged 62, formerly of Calumet City and the “Bush” neighborhood, passed away peacefully on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025.
Born on a chilly February day in Chicago, Illinois, Denise was the youngest member of the Aguilera/Vargas family, the seventh child of Napoleon and Conception Vargas. She attended Sullivan School, Bowen High School, and later South Suburban College.
A naturally generous person, Denise became a home health caregiver. She had a deep passion for music, especially the “oldies” and she took that passion with her when she moved to Texas. She lived in Houston with her partner Michael for 20 years before returning to the Chicagoland area.
Denise is survived by her siblings: Patricia (Emilio) Cruz, John Aguilera, David (Carmela Rodriguez) Vargas, Joyce (Don) Peulecke, numerous cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many close friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Napoleon and Conception (Marquez), and her brothers Tony (Junebug) Aguilera and Daniel (Big Shorty) Vargas.
Denise’s kindness, faith, and love of music—especially the oldies—remain her lasting legacy to her beloved family, nieces, nephews, and friends.
