Anastasios K. Pliagos

Passed away on December 11, 2025

Anastasios K. Pliagos (Tom/Tasso), Dedicated Family Man, Beloved Neighbor, and Gentle Spirit

Anastasios K. Pliagos, known affectionately to many as Tom or Tasso, passed away peacefully early in the morning on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the age of 78, in Chicago, Illinois. Born on October 25, 1947, in the village of Myronia, Greece, Anastasios carried the warmth and generosity of his homeland throughout his life on the South Side of Chicago.

A Life Defined by Love and Laughter

Anastasios was truly one of a kind with a gentle spirit that will be missed by all who knew him. He possessed an amazing sense of humor, complemented by a contagious smile and a laugh that would instantly make everyone around him join in. He had a big heart and his love was profoundly felt by everyone he met. Anastasios wanted everyone to feel welcomed and at home, and he was known as one of the most generous people, not just with his time, but with his abundant love.

His Greek Orthodox faith was central to his life, and his love for the Church was a value he proudly passed down to his children. Anastasios also had a talent for amazing storytelling. His children and daughter-in-law loved hearing him recount his time in the Greek military—from his travels and different posts, his memory of those events never dulled. His deep knowledge of his community was legendary; he could give directions to any location on the South Side of Chicago. In the kitchen, he was famous for making a fantastic homemade pizza and rice pudding.

Hard Work and Selfless Service

Anastasios served proudly in the Greek Military before marrying Maria, on September 6, 1970. Driven by a desire for a better life and greater opportunities, they immigrated to the United States. His life revolved entirely around helping others and ensuring his family's success. He worked tirelessly, achieving his proudest accomplishment: putting both of his sons through college and Pharmacy school.

His professional skill was known throughout the area; he was a butcher and also renowned as the best breadmaker in town, with people driving from far and wide to purchase his tasty bread from the store where he worked.

His generosity extended well beyond his immediate family. Anastasios was the neighbor everyone could count on, known for his readiness to help with anything from home projects and driving to appointments to simply lending a helping hand whenever needed. He was a pillar of his community, always willing to share his time and tools; neighbors knew him for assisting with his lawnmower in the summer and his snowblower in the winter.

Anastasios shared a great passion for gardening with his wife, Maria. Together, they cultivated a meticulous and bountiful vegetable garden, freely sharing their harvest with friends, family, and neighbors. He later passed on this valuable knowledge and love for the earth to his children and daughter-in-law.

Survivors

Anastasios is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Maria; his devoted sons, Konstantinos and Dimitrios; his daughter-in-law, Ekaterini; his brothers, Nikos, Thanasis, Dionysis; and his sister, Stavroula. He is also remembered by his goddaughter, Maria, and numerous loving nieces and nephews both in the United States and in Greece.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Olga; his father, Konstantinos; and his siblings, Vasillis, Georgia, and Eleni; and his nephew, Konstantinos.

He was immensely loved and will be greatly missed by all.
