Lawrence “Larry” Franks, age 84, late of St. John, passed away on November 27, 2025. Beloved husband of Jan (nee Burdick) for 54 years. Loving father of Kristine (Tim) Ward, Brenda (Andy) Knosp and Cheryl Franks. Devoted grandfather of Madelyn Ward, late Alison Ward, Natalie Knosp, Kayla Knosp and Ashley Knosp. Dearest brother of Carol (Rich) Olson and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Larry grew up in Swea City, a small rural town in northern Iowa, alongside his younger sister, Carol. His academic journey took him to Bethel College, Iowa State University, and ultimately culminated in earning a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from Kansas State University. While in Manhattan, KS, he was introduced to Jan, who after a two-year courtship became his wife. In 1970, Larry moved to Northwest Indiana to begin his career as a Research Engineer at Inland Steel, where over the next 31 years he earned multiple industry accolades and was awarded two patents for galvanization products.
Larry’s greatest joy was not found in titles or achievements, but in his role as a family man. As the ultimate “girl dad,” Larry poured his heart into raising three daughters and later embraced the gift of five granddaughters. Over the years, he served as a softball and basketball coach, volleyball referee, chief homework advisor, and countless other roles.
Larry lived his faith through service. At St. John the Evangelist Parish, he volunteered at summer festivals, assisted with weekly church operations, and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, eventually serving as Grand Knight. He was also a talented tour guide at the Shrine of Christ’s Passion, where his kindness and storytelling touched countless visitors.
A diehard Cubs fan, Larry’s other personal interests included genealogy, golf, photography, pinochle, world travel, and cheering on Purdue sports. He was a lifelong learner, always with his nose in a book or attending an online class. Larry will be remembered as a humble man of great integrity, honesty, and remarkable intellect.
