Ivan John Jovanovich, "Shotsie"

Passed away on October 30, 2025

Ivan John “Shotsie” Jovanovich.  Passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen (Marianovich) Jovanovich. Formerly of the South Chicago/Veterans Park neighborhood, John and Helen most recently resided at Lago Vista in Lockport.

A proud Korean War veteran, John’s career as a Chicago Police Officer led him on many adventures. However, his zest for life reached far beyond his occupation. He was a proud Croatian man, always ready to sing a “Živio” or two with his great friends Joe Alfie, John Melvan, and John Botich.

John was also a phenomenal bowler and pool shark—many lost a few bucks to his skill and expertise! Above all, he was a devoted husband who never wavered in caring for his wife and children. His selfless care for Helen until her passing on May 23, 2025, was a true act of love—a love story by which all marriages should be measured.

Ultimately, John died of a broken heart, missing his beloved wife so deeply. Reunited in death, they continue their love story in heaven. Fittingly, John arrived just in time to celebrate what would have been their 70th wedding anniversary on November 3rd.

We are all blessed to have had them for so long. They supported and loved each of their children: John (Sharon) Jovanovich, Gail (Mark) Botich, Sue (Tim) Patz, and Mary (Anthony) Brazzale; their nine grandchildren: Kara, Amy, Nicole, Natalee, Lauren, Anna, Sarah, Dominic, and Grace; and eleven great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his late wife Helen (Marianovich) Jovanovich, great-grandson Myles Olson; his sisters Ora (late Ed) Poropat, Fran (late John) Mullen-Sujewicz, Anne (late Chuck) Cikulin and  Mildred (late Frank) Napolski; and his brother-in-law Peter (Judy) Marianovich.  He is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Here’s to a life well lived… Živio!

"Mr. Jovanovich was such a wonderful man ! He and Mrs J were the kind of couple who took great care of all of the Vets Park kids like their own! Their passing is a great loss to all of us but I’m sure that they’re having a blast up in heaven dancing the Anniversary Waltz. My prayers are with you all. May they both rest in peace!"
