Samuel Alvelo, "Sam"

Passed away on October 25, 2025

Samuel “Sam” Alvelo, 67, of Chicago’s South Side, passed away on October 25, 2025. He was the devoted son of the late Leopoldo† and Angelita† Alvelo; and beloved brother of Sonia (Antonio) Alvelo Perez, Maria (Jose) Alvelo Santiago, Leopoldo (Carmen) Alvelo, and Angelo Alvelo. A loving father, he is survived by Samuel Jesus and Emily LaRee Alvelo; shared with his former wife and friend, Elizabeth Rosado Alvelo. And cherished by his grandchildren Samuel Antonio and Paloma Loren Alvelo.

Fondly called “Uncle Sam” by his Alvelo and Rosado nieces and nephews, he was also treasured by the Crespo Family. His dearest friend Rose† Velez held a special place in his heart and spirit, while childhood friend Raul Perez shared a lifelong bond.

Sam’s life reflected perseverance, joy, and an endless desire to grow. After spending six months in a body cast as a child, he defied limitations to become a lifelong athlete and learner. He taught himself piano, earned a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree from Roosevelt University as an adult, and was never afraid to reinvent himself. A veteran of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, a proud member of Electricians Union Local 134, and a CTA electrician retiree. A Chicago Golden Gloves Champion and Illinois Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, he embodied strength, discipline, and grace in all he pursued.

A God-worshipping man, he lived with faith, gratitude, and humility. Friends and family remember him as a free spirit who celebrated life—singing, dancing first, or sharing stories that could light up a room. His laugh was contagious, his one-liners wise, and he always found reasons to look on the bright side.

Health and fitness were among his greatest passions, especially boxing and running. He encouraged others to live fully, move with purpose, to care for their health with gratitude and joy, and to treat all of God’s creation with respect and dignity. Sam’s love for canines began early and lasted a lifetime; he leaves behind his loyal companion, Winston.

Sam will be remembered for his humility, kindness, and unwavering optimism. His presence made every space lighter, every conversation warmer, and every friendship lasting.

"“The Light He Left Behind” In Loving Memory of Samuel “Sam” Alvelo (1958–2025) He rose each day with faith in his chest, A soldier’s heart that never found rest— Not from the world, but from his call, To rise again each time he’d fall. From body cast to boxing ring, He turned his trials into wings. A fighter, yes, but more than might, He carried God’s own steady light. He laughed with joy, he danced with soul, He made the weary feel made whole. A friend, a brother, father true, Whose humble grace in all shone through. The city lights of Chicago gleam, Still whisper softly, “Follow your dream.” For Sam once ran those very streets, With rhythm, faith, and tireless feet. He spoke of life with humor and care, Found heaven’s beauty everywhere. A man of purpose, fierce yet kind, Who left his love in hearts and time. Now heaven’s bell rings clear and bright, A champion walks in God’s pure light. Though we must part, his spirit stays The light he left will guide our days. Forever remembered, deeply adored Samuel “Sam” Alvelo, home with the Lord. He will be deeply missed. May God’s love bring you peace, comfort, and strength through this difficult time, and may His presence surround your family with hope in the days ahead. Thinking of you Always and in my prayers, With Love, Darlene and Julio"
