Robert E. Steinway

Passed away on October 24, 2025

Robert “Bob” E. Steinway of Dyer, Indiana passed away in the presence of his family on the morning of October 24, 2025.

Bob was born on September 11, 1952 at Mercy Hospital on Chicago’s South Side. A native of the South Shore neighborhood, he attended St. Bride’s and later Mount Carmel before graduating from Hinsdale South High School in 1970. Bob served honorably in the US Air Force for four years, including a tour of duty in Southeast Asia. Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Bob proudly served in both the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department as well as the University of Chicago Police Department, for over 30 years of combined law enforcement service.

Bob was a devoted husband to his wife of 47 years, Mary Lou. The two of them shared many laughs and adventures over the years, including several trips to Europe. Bob was a dedicated and very proud father to his son, Christopher, and daughter-in-law, Brenna. His granddaughters Annie and Tori were the light of his life, and he enjoyed many days visiting, joking and playing with them. Bob was a devoted and loving owner of many dogs over the years, including Baxter, the Alpha dog in his heart, and Sparkle, his favorite cuddling partner. An avid reader, Bob remained engaged with history, politics and current events throughout his life. Most afternoons, Bob could be found reading and enjoying a cigar with a Cuba Libre.

He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph E. and Margaret (initial) (nee O’Ryan) Steinway, and is survived by his wife Mary Lou (nee Michalic), son Chris, daughter-in-law Brenna, grandchildren Annie and Tori, his four siblings, Margaret M. (John) Rohlfing, Ralph E. (Linda – dec.), Roger F. (Debbie) and John J. (Linda) Steinway along with several nieces and nephews.

Bob cared deeply about the welfare of police families and animals; as such, the Steinway family would ask that any donations be made to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation or the Humane World for Animals (former the Humane Society of the US) in lieu of flowers.

"Bob was one of those rare people who could brighten your day with nothing more than a smile and a wave. He had a kind heart, a gentle spirit, and a love for life that was felt by everyone who knew him. Whether he was out walking his beloved dogs or simply greeting neighbors passing by, Bob’s warmth and friendliness made our street feel like a true community. He adored his wife and his animals, and it showed in every small act of kindness. His presence will be deeply missed, but the joy and compassion he shared will always be remembered by all of us lucky enough to call him a friend and neighbor. May he rest in peace, and may his memory continue to bring smiles — just like he always did. 🕊️🐾"
