Teofilo Barraza, Sr., age 100, late of South Chicago passed away on October 13, 2025. Beloved husband of late Paulina (nee Chavez). Loving father of Leno (Luvy) Barraza, Maria (Mario Perez) Barraza, Olga (Rogelio) Bugarin, Manuel (Rose) Barraza, late Teofilo (Norma) Barraza Jr., Dora (Fred) Urdiales and Roman Barraza. Devoted grandfather of 24 and great-grandfather of 19. Dear son of the late Isidro Barraza and late Maria Barraza. Teofilo was one of ten siblings in both the United States and Mexico. Fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Teofilo came to the United States in 1947 during the Bracero era, after serving in the Mexican military. The following year, on January 8—his birthday—he married Paulina, his neighbor and childhood friend from Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango.
With the help of his older brother, Magdaleno, Teofilo obtained residency and, in 1963, arranged for the rest of his family to immigrate to the United States. Shortly after, he suffered a work-related accident in which doctors recommended amputating his leg. But being the determined man he was, Teofilo did his own physical therapy, ultimately keeping his leg and living a full, active life. During his recovery, he worked at his cousin Eddie Peralta’s store to continue providing for his family.
Teofilo was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family deeply. After the birth of his first grandchild, he lovingly became known as “Teto,” a name that would carry through generations.
In his retirement, Teofilo enjoyed spending time at the South Chicago YMCA playing cards, checkers, and dominoes. He loved singing, playing guitar, and sharing stories. He and Paulina were faithful parishioners of Our Lady of Guadalupe. After Paulina’s passing in 2006, Teofilo continued to attend Mass regularly, carrying his faith steadfastly.
He cherished the simple joys in life—often visiting Calumet Park with his children and enjoying a Polish sausage or Italian beef from Skyway Hot Dogs. Teofilo also had a well-known sweet tooth, especially for desserts like ice cream, Jell-O, and rice pudding, which always brought a smile to his face.
In his later years, he found comfort in reading the Bible and resting in the peace that only God can give.
Teofilo carried a quiet strength and gentle calmness that touched everyone who knew him. Even through sickness and pain, he faced life with unwavering grace, faith, and positivity.
Teofilo will be deeply loved and remembered by many. His family will forever cherish every memory, smile, and laugh they shared. Though many hearts are heavy in his absence, we find comfort in knowing that our Lord Jesus now holds him tenderly in the shelter of His hands.
