It is with a sad and heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mario Marin, our union's former Secretary-Treasurer and Director of Meatpacking, Meat Processing and Manufacturing. Mario left an indelible mark at UFCW 1546 with our staff, stewards, membership, and the employers we represent. He will be greatly missed.
Mario dedicated his career to advancing the rights and wellbeing of working people across Chicago, the Midwest, and beyond. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College Chicago (1990–1995), he began his lifelong commitment to the labor movement with the UFCW in 1997.
From 2007 to 2016, he served as Area Director for the Chicago & Midwest Regional Joint Board of Workers United, where he championed fair wages, workplace protections, and dignity for thousands of workers. In October 2016, he became a Business Agent with UFCW Local 1546, where his leadership and dedication earned him continued recognition. By June 2020, he was appointed Director of Food Packing, Processing and Manufacturing, as well as Recorder for Local 1546. His tireless service led to his appointment as Secretary-Treasurer in August 2025.
Throughout his career, he also served as Trustee for multiple labor funds, including the UFCW Unions and Employers Midwest Health Benefits Fund, UFCW Local 1546 Pension Fund, UFCW Local 1546 Food Handlers Health & Welfare Fund, and the UFCW Local 1546 Union Medical Center. He proudly represented workers as a Delegate to the Chicago Federation of Labor and the Milwaukee Area Labor Council, and as a member of the South Central Federation of Labor in Madison, WI. His dedication to the labor community also extended nationally through roles such as Board Member of Amalgamated Life and Health Insurance Company and Wisconsin State AFL-CIO Executive Board Member, as well as service on the Executive Board of the Chicago & Midwest Regional Joint Board, Workers United/SEIU.
Beyond his professional achievements, he was deeply passionate about causes close to his heart: arts and culture, children’s welfare, civil rights, human rights, politics, and poverty alleviation. A lifelong Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan, he balanced his career with his greatest joy—his family. A devoted husband, father of two sons and one daughter, he always believed that family meant everything.
Mario was born August 26th to Guillermo and Carmen (Carrillo) Marin and lived on 84th and Manistee with his late brother Sergio Marin. Mario is survived by his loving wife Veronica (Torres) Marin. And his legacy is carried on by his three children Stefanie, Sergio, and David.
