Rita Jean Zelenika (nee Grande)

Passed away on May 18, 2025

Rita Jean Zelenika (nee Grande), age 87, passed away peacefully on the morning of May 18th, 2025 after a heroic 8 ½ year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was a resident of Lockport, IL, and formerly of South Holland, Burnham, and the South Chicago neighborhood of South Deering where she attended Bowen High School. She spent her final days surrounded by her husband, children and their spouses, and grandchildren.

Rita was the rock of her family, and her home often became the place to gather. She was an excellent homemaker; always known for the many delicious Italian meals and desserts she made to share with family and friends. She worked as an account executive for Lee Enterprises in South Holland for many years, but her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family. Known as ‘Nana’ by her grandchildren, Rita was a fixture at their school performances and the many sporting events over the years. She will be remembered for her kind heart, contagious laugh, and her devotion to her family.

She was preceded in death by parents John Grande and Anna Grande (nee Cetrone). She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Walter Zelenika, sons Mark (Joyce), John (Lori), and James (Polly), and grandchildren Mark (Shelby), Breanna, Ryan, John, Nick, and Julia.

Visitation will be held Saturday from 9am until the time of Funeral Mass at 10am at St. Joseph Catholic Parish, 410 Jefferson St, Lockport, IL 60441. Private Interment for the immediate family will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Rita’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org.
