Joseph James Bomersback

Passed away on April 3, 2025

Joseph James Bomersback, age 101, passed away peacefully at his home on April 3, 2025.  Born in Hammond, Indiana in 1924 to Anthony and Rose Bomersback.  Joe was the youngest of 5 children.  Preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy (Schrepfer) and siblings Frank, William, Mary (Zaleta) and Ann (Geisen).  He is survived by his children James (Claudia) Bomersback, Gail (Stephen) Lynn, Alan (Cheryl) Bomersback and Laura Latronica.  Joseph took great pride in his 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Joe enjoyed sharing memories of his boyhood in Hammond, whether it was about delivering newspapers by bicycle, working as a golf caddy or shoveling snow, and then spending a dime of his earnings to see a double feature at the Parthenon Theatre or buying a hotdog at Goldbatts.

Soon after graduating from Hammond High School in 1942, Joseph enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Central Pacific Theatre. As a member of the Naval Amphibious group, he operated a landing craft during the beach invasion at Tarawa.  Honorably discharged in 1946, he returned to Hammond. While participating in St. Joseph’s CYO, he met and fell in love with the young woman who would soon become his wife. Joe and Dorothy enjoyed 62 years as a married couple.  During these years they raised their family, spending time with and enjoying vacation with Dorothy’s parents, Andrew and Margaret.  The family camped in the Midwest, and took one long road trip to California in a station wagon to see Joe’s parents.  Upon retirement, Joe and Dorothy enjoyed traveling throughout the USA and Europe.

As a parent, he led by example, showing the value of hard work, education, faith and family.  Joseph loved to engage in conversation and enjoyed the camaraderie of his fishing club buddies, member of the St. John V.F.W. and friends he made throughout his life.

As a member of St. John the Evangelish Parish, Josep devoted many years of volunteer work, developing and maintaining sports programs for elementary school boys and girls which continue today as Southlake CYO programs for 15 parishes.  During his working career he was employed with U.S. Steel, American Steel, and Inland Steel over a 40 year period.

"Mr. Bomersback was a 2nd father to me all through my childhood (Gail was my best friend in the whole world!) I will always remember his laugh, kindness and patience. All of us kids in the neighborhood looked at him as "bigger than life". He was on my mind the past few days and when I Googled his name, I learned of his passing. I would have loved to have been at his service. Prayers for Joe and the family."
