Passed away on March 28, 2025


John Chengary, age 90. 65-year resident of Hegewisch, passed away on March 28, 2025. Beloved husband of the late Nancy (nee Swick) for 63 years. Loving father of Debra (Greg) Smith, Julie (David) Zielke, Nancy (Bob) Konecek, John (Gail) Chengary, and Cheryl (Randy) Fugaj. Devoted grandfather of 14 and cherished great-grandfather of 23. Dearest brother of Jim (late Barbara) Chengary, late Dorothy (Richard) Hauer, and late Jerome Chengary. Fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. John is preceded in death by his parents John and Stella Chengary and in-laws Alex and Sophie Swick. He was a retired employee of Acme Steel in Riverdale. John was a longtime parishioner of St. Columba Church and founding member of Athletic Program, and mastermind of Bell Tower Restoration. He was very involved in many activities and organizations in the Hegewisch community, especially Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. Visitation Tuesday, April 1, 2025, from 3-7 p.m. Funeral Services Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 9:15 a.m. from the Elmwood Chapel, 11200 S. Ewing Ave., Chicago, IL to Christ Our Light Church (formerly St. Florian). Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Cemetery Private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to JDF (Juvenile Diabetes Foundation) are preferred in John’s name.
