Philip J. Mullaney

March 15, 1933 to February 10, 2025

Philip J. Mullaney, 91, of Schererville, Ind., formerly of Highland and the East Side of Chicago, passed away peacefully at home on February 10, 2025, with family at his side. Phil was the husband of the late Beverly (nee Bakovich) Mullaney, with whom he shared 61 years of devoted marriage.

Phil is survived by children Mark (Nanette) Mullaney of South Bend, Paul (Kelly) Mullaney of Hammond, Carol (Brian McMorrow) Mullaney of South Bend, Eileen (Gib) Wieser of Schererville, and David (Lorri) Mullaney of Hobart; 16 grandchildren, Dan (Stephanie), Michael (Chelsea), Mary, and Steve (Nikki) Mullaney and Kate (Pete) Shirley; John (Marcela), Kevin (Marci), Rose, Jimmy, Erin and Megan Mullaney; Matt (Morgan) and Brian Wieser, and Sarah (Nick) Stachowiak; Brendan and Colin (fiancée Molly) Mullaney; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Also preceding Phil in death were his parents, Charles and Sarah (nee Coyne) Mullaney; brothers Charles (Ada) and Thomas (JoAnn) Mullaney; and sister Joyce Mullaney.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2025, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1 W. Wilhelm St., Schererville, Ind., with the Rev. Martin Dobrzynski officiating and the Rev. Dominic Bertino assisting. Burial immediately following at St. Michael Church Cemetery. Friends are invited to meet with the family Sunday, Feb. 16, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Elmwood Funeral Chapel, 11300 W. 97th Lane (just west of U.S. 41), St. John, Ind. A prayer service will be held at 2 p.m.

Phil was a tremendously dedicated husband, father, son, brother and friend, strong in his faith and his commitment to family. He was raised in Chicago’s East Side neighborhood and was a product of Catholic schools, graduating from St. Francis de Sales Grade School, Mount Carmel High School and Loyola University. Phil and Bev were such believers in and supporters of Catholic education that all five of their children graduated from Catholic schools at every level – grade school, high school and college.

After serving in the Army at Fort Meade, Md., and a brief stint teaching English at Mount Carmel, Phil enjoyed a successful career in sales, both in the corporate world and for 18 years as co-owner of Tinker’s Den home improvement center in Highland, Ind.

His hard work and leadership carried over into the many ways he gave back over the years. Among Phil’s additional contributions were serving on the Highland Police Commission; various committees and ministries at Our Lady of Grace Church; as president of his local homeowners association; and president of the Munster chapter of the Mended Hearts support group. Phil’s experience before, during and well beyond his quintuple bypass surgery inspired him to share his positive outlook with families of cardiac surgery patients through Mended Hearts. Considered a textbook patient by his doctors, Phil lived 28 years following his 1997 surgery.

If he wasn’t working, volunteering or – in his later years – attending one of his grandchildren’s games or events, Phil very likely was engaged one way or another in his love for Notre Dame athletics. Even as a Loyola student, he sat on the opposing Notre Dame bench during basketball games due to his association with ND Coach Johnny Jordan. A football and basketball season ticket holder, Phil rarely missed a home game and traveled with Bev and many dear friends for big Fighting Irish games across the country.

His was a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Philip’s name may be made to Bishop Noll Institute, 1519 Hoffman St., Hammond, IN  46327, or to St. Michael the Archangel Church, 1 W. "My sympathies to the entire Mullaney family. Mr Mullaney was the one who got me my first full time job the summer after my freshman year of college. Driving with him to/from work and at the financial printing company that year I learned many things: if your stuck in traffic you turn off the AC and open the car windows, businessmen pay attention if you polish your shoes when you show up for an interview, and it’s ok to leave work a little early if the Cubs are playing at home :) I can still fix any paper jam a copy machine may have :) He was a good man and ever better father and husband. "Phil Mullaney was the epitome of what we affectionately call a "Notre Dame man." Not only because he bled blue and gold on game days - which he did - but also because he embodied the essence of what those of us who love the place believe it represents; faith, family, loyalty and love. Faith in our God, His son, Jesus, and Our Blessed Lady - Notre Dame. Phil Mullaney, like my dad and so many other parents, although they didn't attend the university, sacrificed to send their children to Notre Dame"

"It was a genuine pleasure knowing Mister Phil. He was a wealth of knowledge and had such a very pleasant way of sharing his knowledge. We were able to interact with him at the many Mullaney Family parties Losing him is sad for the rest of us and a joy in heaven gaining a new angel. Our deepest sympathies to his Family and Friends. "
