It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Geraldine “Gerri” Graan Hibma (nee Bogoioff), who left us peacefully on January 27, 2025 at the age of 97. Born on December 17, 1927,in South Chicago. She was a long time resident of the East Side followed by South Holland and Dyer/Munster in her later years. Geraldine, lived a full life of love, good will, and unwavering strength.
Gerri was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother, whose love and guidance shaped the lives of her family. Her home was always a place of comfort and joy, filled with laughter and cherished memories.
She was a force of nature with a tireless work ethic who dedicated many years of her life to working in the emergency department at former South Chicago Hospital and the medical office of her dear friend, Dr. Cyrus Akrami. Her commitment to helping others at their most vulnerable moments was a testament to her strength, compassion, and resilience.
In her senior years, Gerri found joy in attending bunco games as well as participating in senior citizen day trips. She also enjoyed spending endless hours playing puzzles and games on her iPad always keeping her mind sharp and engaged.
She is survived by her daughters, Janet (Michael) Graan Nemlich, Jayme (Raymond) Hibma Matesevac, grandchildren; Arianne Malkowski, Kaitlin (Tim) Malkowski Carrero, Sara (Lukas) Matesevac Hackett, Ryan Matesevac, and great grandchildren, Victoria Velez, and Vincent Velez. She is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Proceeded in joining the Lord: her sons, Kenneth Graan and Raymond (Jane) Graan and husbands, Kenneth Graan and James Hibma. Gerri will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 1st at Elmwood Funeral Chapel at 11200 South Ewing Ave. Chicago, IL. Visitation from 12:00 noon - 3:00 pm with a Funeral Service at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) in her memory.
