Juan Pablo Alvarez

Passed away on January 5, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Juan Pablo Alvarez, who peacefully left us early Sunday morning on January 5, 2025, after a courageous and valiant battle with Glioblastoma. He was deeply loved and cherished by all who knew him, especially his devoted wife, six children, and many grandchildren, who made sure he was never alone during his illness.

Born in Los Reales, Zacatecas on March 2, 1937, Juan Pablo developed a strong work ethic and a love for the outdoors, which included farming and caring for animals. In his early twenties, he immigrated to the United States, where he worked as a migrant farmer, harvesting crops under the scorching sun. His journey took him from Texas to California, where he picked vegetables and fruit that would land in thousands of households.. He later returned to Zacatecas, where he married the love of his life, Guillermina Velazquez, with whom he shared a lifelong partnership. Juan Pablo then immigrated permanently to Chicago, where he raised his three sons and three daughters with a foundation built on faith, family, and hard work.

For nearly 30 years, he worked tirelessly at Ford, where his skilled hands left fingerprints on hundreds of cars daily, installing doors on the assembly line. Even after retirement, Juan Pablo did not slow down; he worked for another 25 years in various roles until he became ill. Outside of work, he was an active member of several parishes, teaching catechism, helping others where needed, and providing comfort to the sick through the Eucharist. His love for farming remained strong throughout his life and found solace planting flowers and vegetables in his backyard. He often shared the fruits of his labor—corn, onions, and chilies—with friends, family, and anyone in need. He became affectionately known as "el hombre de los elotes, cebollas, y chiles" (the corn, onion, and chile man) and was a beloved figure in his community.

Juan Pablo is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Guillermina (nee Velazquez), and his children: Frank Alvarez, Isabel (Joseph) Flens, Josie (Antonio) Rios, Pablo (Sofia) Alvarez, David (Maria) Alvarez, and Patty (Dan) Sida. He was a devoted grandfather to 14 grandchildren and a cherished great-grandfather to 3 great-grandchildren. He was also the dear brother of Jesus, Ramon, Leobardo, and Roselia, and a fond uncle to many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francisco Alvarez and Trinidad Alvarez Miramontes, his brothers Manuel and Refugio (Cuco) Alvarez, and grandson, Erik Flens, whom he loved dearly.

Juan Pablo’s visitation will be held at Elmwood Chapel, 11200 S. Ewing Ave., Chicago, IL 60617, on Thursday, January 9, 2025, from 2:00–8:00 p.m. The family will receive relatives, friends, and guests. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, followed by his burial at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 801 Michigan City Rd., Calumet City, IL 60409.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of support they have received during this difficult time. Juan Pablo was an extraordinary man who embodied selflessness, resilience, hard work, and a deep devotion to God and his family.

**********************************************************************
