Richard J Papiese

Passed away on December 4, 2024

Richard J. Papiese, age 65.  Late of Cedar Lake, Indiana.  Passed away December 4, 2024.  Beloved husband of Karen (nee Garbarczyk). Rich is also survived by his cousin and devoted care giver Justin Shimkus; children: Jeanine (Dan) Zajeski, Frank (Andrea) Opiola, and Alan (Jenn) Opiola; grandchildren: Tayler, Katelyn, Mason, Skylar, Gianna, Noelle, Julia, Josh, Eddie, and Emma; siblings: Cathy (Paul) Levy, Debbie (Bob) Cruz, Sue (Willie) Gutierrez, Lara (Shaun) Fricke, Bill Papiese, the late Paul Papiese, and Mona (Scott) Davis; in laws: Mary Ellen (Gary) Rassel and John (Jackie) Garbarczyk, as well as many nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his father Richard J. Papiese and mother Annette Miller (nee Shimkus).

Richard paints a picture of a truly remarkable guy—someone who lived with generosity, love, and a passion for life. Although his exterior was tough, he had a giant heart. Richard touched a lot of lives and used his success to better others. His legacy is clearly one of great accomplishments and kindness. Rich's approach to life, his ability to give and celebrate life with others, left an indelible mark on those who knew him. His impact on his family, friends, and those around him will continue to be felt for years to come. The love he shared with his wife, Karen, their children, and grandchildren was immense. Richard was co-owner of Midwest Custom Case, Inc., a store fixture manufacturing company, and owner of Midwest Thoroughbreds, Inc. He was the first one at work and the last one to leave. Rich had a brilliant business mind and a passion for horses. He used those qualities to become one the leading thoroughbred owners. Hence, Work All Week. The cheerful outlook he kept while facing this intensely painful, degenerative illness of MSA (Multiple System Atrophy) was incredible. It is comforting to think of him in a place of peace, surrounded by joy, and reunited with others who have passed. We are sure Rich would want everyone to remember the magic and miracles he brought into everyone’s life, even as you mourn. He will be missed by many, but his legacy of love, kindness, and success will continue to live on, in the lives of his family and in the stories shared about him.

Condolences
"So very sorry to read of Rich’s passing. Will long remember the glory days of Midwest Stables at Arlington Park and Hawthorne. “The Pizza Man” made Illinois horsemen and women so proud when he captured The Million at Arlington. My sincere sympathies to his family. "

"I'm sad to learn of Richard's passing. He owned my racehorse, LeJester (now going on 25!) and when it became apparent Jester could race no longer, turned him out on grass for a year to heal a seismoid fracture, then relinquished him to Galloping Out. Jester was sponsored by Illinois Equine Humane Center, where I was volunteering. I bought him in 2011, and growing old with my prince, and at times, my savior, has been one of the greatest pleasures in my life. If it was not for Richard and Karen at Midwest Thoroughbreds, who knows what might have happened to my beloved Jester? God bless Richard, now in the lap of God, resting his eyes on perfect pastures, dotted with peacefully grazing horses."

"No matter how bad you may have felt, you always told me not to worry, you were okay. Now I know that you are truly okay, resting in eternal peace and free from all pain. I will miss our visits and backgammon games, even though you beat me most of the time :) I love you my brother and pray that we will be together one day."
