Helen Reid

Passed away on March 19, 2024

Helen Marie Reid (née Davis), 102 years old, formerly of Hammond and Demotte passed away peacefully in her sleep at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Saint John, IN on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.

Helen was born June 9, 1921 in Staunton, IL and graduated in 1939 from Hammond High School. She married Robert M. Reid on August 16, 1941 and just a few months later, Robert enlisted in the Army and Helen became a war bride. She always remembered this time in her life as being significant. After the war, Helen and Bob settled in Hammond, raising a family. When Bob retired, they moved to Demotte, IN.

Helen was a woman of strong faith. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Hessville for more than 60 years and a member of the Christian Church of Demotte for more than 10 years. Helen loved to work puzzles, read, and grow vegetables. Helen had such a green thumb and was known to bring back houseplants that were beyond hope. She was an accomplished seamstress and made clothes for herself and her daughters as well as stuffed toys and doll clothes for her grandchildren.

Helen was a stay-at-home wife and mother who made her family a priority. She loved to put the kettle on and share a cup of tea and cookies with family and friends when they came to visit. She was a night owl who loved to read magazines and watch movies on the Hallmark channel.

Helen is survived by her daughters Sharon Chumley of Griffith, Mona (Allen) King of Fishers, IN and Jeannie (Michael) Homrich of Saint John; one brother, Charles Yates of Monticello; grandchildren: Michelle Westlund, Brian Bartoszek, Jim Cain, Dan Cain, Julianne Kiewitt, Heidi Diegel, and Emily Mitchell; ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Reid and parents, Charles E. and Ola Blanche Davis as well as her sisters, Francis Rothrock and Jean Porter.

There will be a private graveside service for immediate family only. Donations may be made in Helen’s name to Haven Hospice, 1114 S. Halleck St, Demotte, IN 46310-9701. For more information 219-365-3474
