Fr. Thomas M. Greaney, O.S.M.

Fr. Thomas (Tom) M. Greaney, O.S.M., 84, died September 25, 2021 at AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center in Hinsdale, Illinois.

Fr. Tom was a professed friar in the Order of Friar Servants of Mary (Servites) -USA Province for 59 years and a priest for 51 years. He lived in retirement at our Lady of Sorrows Monastery in Chicago, Illinois.

He was born in Lisdonagh, Caherlistrane, County Galway, Ireland on January 23, 1937 to the late John and Delia Mary (Conroy) Greaney. Fr. Greaney entered the Servite Order in 1961 at Our Lady of Benburb Priory, Benburb, Ireland. In 1965 he was transferred to Our Lady of the Forest-Stonebridge Priory, Lake Bluff, IL. He attended St. Louis University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy (1966). He then attended Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park, IL where he received his Master’s in Divinity (1970).  He also earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Loyola University in Chicago, IL (1970).

Fr. Tom is survived by his brother: Michael Greaney of Lisdonagh, Caherlistrane, County Galway, Ireland. His sisters: Sheila (Peter) Kelly of Headford, County Galway, Ireland; Bridie Wilson of Tuam, County Galway, Ireland; and Sister Mary Greaney, a Columban Sister from Crumlin, Dublin, Ireland; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 10:30A.M. at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica, 3121 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL.  Visitation will take place 9:00A.M.-10:30A.M. at the church prior to the Funeral Mass.
