Cleta Ardell Walker

Passed away on February 27, 2021


Cleta Ardell (Carter) Walker, 89, of Greenfield, Indiana (formerly of Argos, Indiana; Cedar Lake, Indiana; and Decatur, Illinois), died peacefully on February 27, 2021. She was born April 7, 1931, in Vernon, Illinois. She married Donald E. Walker on June 6, 1948, and together, they raised six children: Steven (Sandra) Walker of Waxahachie, Texas; Michael (Julie) Walker of Fairfield Township, Ohio; David (Angie) Walker of Greenfield, Indiana; Richard (Missy) Walker of Edwardsville, Illinois; Cathy Walker of North Judson, Indiana; and Joseph (fiancé Tisha VanDyke) Walker of Lowell, Indiana. They were blessed with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren as well as numerous close friends, including former daughter-in-law, Sue Walker. Also surviving are Cleta’s sister Reva (John) Denton, brother Duane (Sue) Carter, and brother-in-law Darrel (Gloria) Walker. Cleta was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, her parents, Cecil and Mildred Carter, and siblings, Cecil, Yvette, Donald, Mildred Charlene, and John.

Cleta attended Stephen Decatur High School in Decatur, Illinois. Cleta and her husband Don were married 50 years and lived in Cedar Lake, Indiana from 1955 until his death in 1998.

Cleta served as Cedar Lake Clerk Treasurer from 1976 until 1983.  She was also a Democratic Precinct Committeewoman for more than 20 years and served on various boards and committees for the Cedar Lake Business and Professional Women’s Club, Chamber of Commerce, South Shore Improvement Association, MacArthur School PTO, the Cedar Lake Historical Association, and the Cedar Lake Civil Defense Club.

She served on the Board of the Indiana League of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers and received her accreditation certificate from the Indiana League of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers in 1980.  Cleta became a Certified Clerk-Treasurer from the State of Indiana by completing classes from Ball State University and Georgetown University and was designated as a Certified Municipal Clerk by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks in 1982.

Cleta was a role model for serving her community in numerous ways for decades, all while raising six children. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

 

Memorials may be made to the Cedar Lake Historical Association. Visitation will take place on Friday, March 5, 2021, from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 12:00 noon at the Elmwood Funeral Chapel 9931 Lincoln Plaza Way (1/2 block south of 133rd Ave. across from the Library) Cedar Lake, Indiana. Interment German Methodist Cemetery.
