Daniel Robert O’Connell, age 87.  Late of Dyer, Indiana. Formerly of Park Forest, Illinois.  Passed away July 21, 2020.  Beloved husband of the late Marilyn P. O’Connell (nee Kelly).  Loving father of Maureen (Steven) Hughes, Patrice (Mark McDowell, fiancé) Haecker, Martin O’Connell, and Kathleen (Jesse) Justice.  Cherished grandfather of Robert (Kristen) Buzan, Shannon (Ryan) Smith, Paul (Emily) Justice, Christopher (Hannah) Justice, Sean (Stephanie) Justice, and Trevor Justice.  Cherished great grandfather of Kaitlin and Ethan Buzan and Lucas and Brooklyn Smith.  Dear brother of the late Gayle (late Thomas) O’Donovan.  Cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.  Beloved husband of the late Darlene Sassamon O'Connell.  Loving step-father of the late Michael Sassamon, William Sassamon, Toni (Garrett) Miller and Lisa Sassamon.  Cherished grandfather of Nikol, Chad and Melissa Sassamon, Craig Sassamon, William Jr. (Melanie) Sassamon, Stacy (Dameon) Schneider, Savanna (Nick) Montalta, and Stephanie (Joshua) Sifrit.   Cherished great grandfather of 16 great grandchildren. Dan was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving 1952 – 1993. He also retired as Lieutenant with the Park Forest Volunteer Fire Department, serving 1967 - 1979. He always made mention of how much the years on the department meant to him.  At his request, memorial donations in his memory may be made directly to the Park Forest Fire Department, Attn.
