Maria Elena Sutton, age 90, died on Monday, April 27, 2020 in Homewood, Cook, Illinois. She was born as Elena Cervantes on June 15, 1929 in Los Reyes, Michoacán, Mexico to Juan Cervantes Oceguera and Maria Lua Olivares. She was part of a large family with 11 siblings. As a young adult she immigrated to Washington, District of Columbia in the United States. She married Wallace Peyton Allen of Charlottesville, Albemarle, Virginia in 1955 at Rockville, Montgomery, Maryland. In Washington, D.C. they had a son, William Wallace Allen, in 1956. In 1958 she moved to Hollywood, California to start a new life as a single mother while working and making many friends. She married Everett La Rue Sutton in 1973 in Los Angeles County and together they moved to Springfield, Illinois. She moved to the South Chicago area during her retirement. In 1993 at Chicago, Illinois she realized a lifelong dream to became a naturalized United States citizen. Maria Elena had a wide range of special interests including sewing and knitting, cooking and growing houseplants. Her favorite joy was to meet new people and she cultivated many lasting and deep friendships. She is survived by her son, two grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their gratitude to all the staff at South Suburban Nursing and Harbor Light Hospice for their attentiveness and loving care.
