Visitation Information

Albert P. Lodl

Passed away on March 18, 2020

Albert P. Lodl, 81, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 18, at The Villas of Palos Heights.  A longtime fixture of the East Side, he helped mold the minds of young men and women at St. Francis de Sales High School for all but one year of his 41-year teaching career.  He taught biology and English at SFDS.  He was known by many simply as Coach Lodl.  A Hall-Of-Fame inductee in both the IHSA (1988) and the Chicago Catholic League (1993), Lodl compiled 600 wins in 34 seasons as head varsity baseball coach at de Sales.  He also roamed the sidelines at all levels of Pioneer football in varying roles (frosh/soph head coach, varsity Offensive Line and Off. Coordinator, to name a few).  He even oversaw the SFDS varsity soccer program for three seasons in the late 1970's.

He is survived by his children, Vince and Michele, his sister Claudia McCarthy, his nephews Tim and Quinn as well as countless extended family members.  A visitation/memorial service will take place at a date to be determined once social distancing restrictions are lifted.

" Al was my coach at St Francis for three years. Later on I was his assistant when we coached freshmen football - our team went undefeated. He was most of all a great teacher. He was a good speaker in the class room and believed in helping to mold students and athletes for their own good. He dedicated his life to that. We were lucky to have had him as a teacher."

"Mr. Lodl was the most fun and instructive coach I had at SFDS in the 1960s. He pushed me like no one ever has with his messages of extra effort I have carried through life. It was a great honor to speak at our Dinner For Al in 1996. We visited several times in the last decade and I will always cherish these afternoons with Mr. Lodl. You must be in a better place now.
