Guadalupe Hernandez

Passed away on November 13, 2019

Guadalupe Hernandez passed away at the age of 89 on November 13, 2019, on World Kindness Day.  Late of Cedar Lake, formerly of St. John, Indiana.  Beloved husband of Laura (Nee Vela) for 63 years.  Loving father of Guillermina (Jose) Najera, Laura Garcia, Armando Garcia, Guadalupe Hernandez Jr., Rita (Felipe) Montesinos, Jaime Hernandez, Sandra (Mark) Michalski, Alejandra Hernandez-Conrad, Georgina (Sal) Salazar, and the late Rosalba Carolina Hernandez. He had 22 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren whom he loved dearly.

In April of 1956, he married Laura (Nee Vela).  They raised ten children together.  He was also a fond uncle to many nieces and nephews. Guadalupe worked hard as a self-employed truck driver for many years.  When he wasn’t working, he read his books and Bible, talked about history, passed out Snicker bars to his grandchildren, and prayed.  He always prayed, with his grandchildren or by himself.  With a kind heart and a bright smile, his jokes could remedy any frown.  He was peace.  He was love.  He was everything light.   And that light lives on through his family.

The visitation is Sunday, November 17 from 1:00 – 8:00 pm.  The funeral is Monday, November 18, 2019 at 9:30 am from the Elmwood Funeral Chapel 11300 W. 97th Lane (½ block West of US 41/ Wicker Ave at 97th Lane), St. John, Indiana to St. John the Evangelist Church- Day Chapel, (corner of 93rd and Wicker Ave.)  Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am.  Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. 219-365-3474 www.elmwoodchapel.com
