Mary E. Stokes, (nee Fretter), age 83, late of St. John, IN, formerly of Park Forest, IL and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan passed away on November 8, 2019. Beloved wife of Roger Stokes for 60 years. Loving mother of Nancy (Fred) Curtis, Jill (Marshall) Snell and the late David Roger Stokes. Devoted grandmother of Nathan (Julia) Curtis, Nicole (John) Rioflorido, Collin (Alyssa) Curtis, Parian (Nick) Porter, Auburn Snell and Avalon Snell. Cherished great-grandmother of Charlie, Therese, Monica, Xavier and Madeline. Dear daughter of the late Albert J. “Dutch” and the late Elsie Fretter. Dearest sister of the late Paul Fretter. Fond aunt of many nieces and nephews. Retired School Bus Driver for the Village of Matteson, IL. Mary had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit, which carried her through life, including being an army wife and a caregiver for her son David. She loved reading, especially mystery novels. Mary loved bird watching and collecting bird houses. Mary came from an area in Upper Peninsula Michigan known as The "Copper Country", and maintained lifelong friendships and a love of copper items. Visitation Friday, November 15, 2019 from 4-8 p.m. and on Saturday, November 16, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Services at 10:00 a.m. at the Elmwood Funeral Chapel 11300 West 97th Lane (1/2 block west of U.S. 41 / Wicker Ave. at 97th Street) St. John, IN 46373.
